If it’s December 23, it must be the “only in Oaxaca” Noche de Rábanos. I love going in the morning to watch these skilled artists and their imaginations at work creating exquisite sculptures out of radishes — of all things!
And, there weren’t just radishes. Creations of totomoxle (dried corn husks) and flor inmortal (dried flowers) were also on display. Stay tuned…
I’ve never seen the displays in person- one day maybe. Meanwhile, I always love seeing the photos, Looking forward to it. These photos whet the appetite
They are even more inspiring in person!
I just now read that some of the stands on the Alameda de León collapsed last night, 13 people were injured and the event’s been cancelled. Is that true? Very sad for all involved.
Viewing stands had been set up on the Alameda to watch the Rabanos calenda, which started at the Fuente de 8 Regiones and was to end at the zócalo on the evening of the 22nd. It was those stands that collapsed, so they canceled the end of the parade. The actual Rabanos event on the 23rd went on as planned.
Thanks. I’m sorry for the injured and the effect on the end of that parade, but now again look forward to your photos of the fancy rabanos.
Your updates from Oaxaca are a welcomed reminder of my experiences there. I appreciate your comments and your colorful photos.
