A much needed pause in nesting at the new Casita Colibrí was in order. Teotitán del Valle’s patronal festival of the Preciosa Sangre de Cristo beckoned. The pandemic had closed the village for many months and precluded attending any of the 2020 fiestas. However, with mask on, I returned to spend three days. First on the schedule was Monday evening’s convite (procession) inviting the community to the fiesta.

The last festival in Teotitlán that I attended, before Covid-19 turned the world sideways, was the Fiesta de La Virgen del Rosario in October 2019. The warm welcome I received at the convite on Monday was incredibly touching and I admit to tearing up a little as it began.
This is so rich! I don’t have words at the moment except to say thank you for your vistas!
My sentiments also….grateful to be reminded of this spiritually rich and creative life….
Thank you.
For the last foto I wonder if he’s wondering when he will be asked to take on the responsibilities of los danzantes.
OK – I’m romanticizing —
Maybe he has already made the commitment for 3+ years from now. 😉
👍🏽
Wonderful photos. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Sandi!
Beautiful tradition and beautiful photos. “Tambor player who has walked many miles” tells so many stories, with eloquent simplicity.
El tambordero drummed in and accompanied a troupe of zanqueros (the dancers on stilts from Zaachila) in a performance at the San Juan Cultural Center courtyard several years ago. I happened to be sitting next to a gringo couple from San Miguel de Allende/Ajijic; he had become agitated as the posted start time came and went; she tried to soothe him. He made a remark that perhaps if someone younger was drumming —. Then said something about never returning to Oaxaca. My mouth didn’t respect boundaries and audibly said –
That’s a great decision !!!
(She hid a smile — )
You make me so happy. I will be there in two weeks after a 19 Month absence. I never would have believed I could truly love a city until I found Oaxaca. I am in withdrawal but not for long. Great photos.
Thank you, David. I think you must be here by now. Enjoy!!!
Beautiful pictures❤, wonderful people❤
Thank you. Wonderful people, indeed!
Love this post and your photos. We just returned to Oaxaca after 3 years and are loving it. Staying at Casona del Llano and the wonderful park is such a delight!
I think Oaxaca never ceases to delight!
Thanks Shannon – that’s collection was spectacular and heart-warming to see the festivals starting up again in Oaxaca and especially lovely Teotitlan del Valle – dear to my heart too.
I was filled with gratitude to be back and reconnect with so many friends. However, as of today, we are back in semáforo naranja, so am concerned about what the future brings to Teo.
Teitlan is a special place. With friends and acquaintances …I will be happy when its safe to go back again. Logan Nicholson
Yes, special people, place, and traditions.
I’m concerned that so few of the marchers wore masks or kept “sana distancia” (healthy distance). We want to visit Oaxaca in the next several months. These photos, while excellent, are not inviting. Thanks for sharing!
Yes, mask (cubreboca) wearing isn’t nowhere close to universal in Teotitlán. And, now with the Delta variant, sad to say, I think it’s probably wise to postpone a visit.
