This morning, the steps leading into the Instituto de Artes Gráficas de Oaxaca (IAGO) were a reminder that it was one year ago today that Oaxaca and the world lost artist, philanthropist, and fighter for social justice and the environment, Francisco Toledo.
The Maestro can still be seen along the streets of Oaxaca — his creative spirit lives on.
Is Oaxaca open for tourism again? We’re scheduled to travel end of October and cannot find any info as to status of what businesses are open and what restrictions.

As I wrote in State of yellow non essential businesses are allowed to be open, albeit following safety protocols and restrictions on occupancy. However, that doesn’t mean that all is back to normal and public events have or will, in the near future, resume. Yesterday’s article in Imparcial announced that the traditional Day of the Dead Muerteada in Soledad Etla is canceled due to concerns re potential spread of Covid-19. I suspect other Day of the Dead events will follow. Please understand, Oaxaca is one of the poorest states in Mexico and has a high risk population, especially due to diabetes and heart disease, does not have adequate testing, and the medical care is highly stressed.
Simply stunning. gracias❣️
Toledo was a special and inspiring figure.
