As Día de Muertos approaches and skulls and skeletons seem to be materializing around every corner, I want to highlight the mural painted in October 2025 by Cheni Velazco Santibañez. It’s located in Oaxaca city on a corner building at Calle Tinoco y Palacios and Calle de Jesús Carranza in the historic center. With much respect and a touch of humor, Cheni Velazco honors the hardworking traditional tradesmen and women who, in the words of this article, “once shaped daily life in the city—historically known as Antequera.”
Some of these workers and vendors are gone from the city’s streets but, thankfully, many still remain — continuing to breathe life into the cultural identity of Oaxaca.

Wonderful! I certainly hope this doesn’t get painted over as many murals are. At least you’ve documented it. No balloon sellers, but I guess they aren’t as traditional. I’ve almost never seen anyone buy a balloon but they’re such a cheerful ever-presence in parks and plazas.
