There will be no dancing in the streets or up on Cerro del Fortín this year. Due to Covid-19, La Guelaguetza, Oaxaca’s “máxima fiesta” has been canceled. However, thanks to the artist Bouler (Uriel Barragán), a few of the dancers can be seen dancing on the walls of Barrio de Jalatlaco.
If his work looks familiar, it is because this image from two weeks ago is part of the above series. In addition, he also painted the mural honoring Macedonio Alcalá in Jardín Carbajal.
What a shame, no Guelaguetza after how many consecutive years? But safety first. On to next year, we all hope & pray. Maybe we’ll see more pictoral salutes to that beautiful, colorful event.
They are now talking about holding it in December, if it is safe. We shall see…
Good prudence, caution and reasoned measure. There will always be likewise seasonal festivities in near future. Thankfully no rallies are planned, but obviously, Oaxacans know better.
Yes, I think there is more reliance on science and reality in Oaxaca than there is in the USA. Hope all is okay up your way in Canada.
