Yikes, I realized it’s been nine days since my last blog post. Time does, indeed, fly when you’re having fun. And, fun is what I’ve been having, especially during the last four days.
July 4, 2022 – Convite in Teotitlán del Valle for their patronal festival honoring Preciosa Sangre de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo.
July 5, 2022 – Morning hike in the hills of Teotitlán del Valle.
July 5, 2022 – Afternoon presentation of the Danza de la Pluma in honor of Preciosa Sangre de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo in Teotitlán del Valle.
July 6, 2022 – Full day of Danza de la Pluma honoring Preciosa Sangre de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo in Teotitlán del Valle.
July 7, 2022 – Calenda celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Galería La Mano Mágica in Oaxaca city.
More on the convite, Danza de la Pluma, hike, and calenda to follow. But, first, a return to Teotitlán del Valle today for the final Danza de la Pluma presentation for this festival.
Hi Shannon….would you mind keeping your eyes and ears open about apartments for rent with a small yard for my dog? Thanks…I just can’t take another sub zero winter on Santa Fe!
Thank you for taking us along.
Por favor – because of their specificity I’m not finding definitions of convite and calenda. Years ago Bibiana tried to explain the difference; I just didn’t have the language or cultural skills to grasp. I’d ask her again, but she died in November (still a huge hole in my heart). Can you provide some basic definition of the differences? I think that the convite is more secular – not a religious procession where a calenda is usually associated with a religious event. And a desfile? = a parade for any reason?
So many more words to learn in Oaxaca and in other regiones de México than one ever learns in formal classes, ¿No?

Thanks, Mary. My understanding of the various kinds of parades:
Convite – a parade that serves as an invitation to a religious or secular festival
Calenda – a celebratory parade that people can join
Desfile – an orderly parade
Procesión – a religious parade/procession
Fantastic blog and photos. I’m coming to Oaxaca in. Few weeks and I’d like to meet some expats. To hang out, get recommendations, discuss life there. Any recommendations for where I might contact this community? Many thanks!
The Oaxaca Lending Library(OLL) is on calle Piño Suarez just south of Paseo Juárez also called Parque Llano (which used to be the zoo and is el Llano because after walking uphill north from the Zócalo the land is a bit flat = llano for a short distance). The OLL often has lots of ex-pats around and has tours, etc. especially for such folk. You may also want to take a group language class at one of the several language schools in Oaxaca de Juárez = the city of Oaxaca often mislabeled. Enjoy your stay.
