Unsurprisingly, on Monday Oaxaca went back to Covid-19 Semáforo Naranja (orange traffic light) — meaning there is a high risk of contagion of the virus. On Wednesday, it was reported there were 479 new COVID-19 patients, the highest figure of the year.
Unfortunately, having had to run a few errands over the past few days, I haven’t seen any changes in people’s behavior, business/government/museum closings, nor enforcement of the mask wearing mandate — only an announcement by the archbishop that churches would be limited to 25% capacity.
It is demoralizing and infuriating and all I can do is continue to wear a cubreboca (face mask) whenever I’m out and about, practice social distancing, and try to stay sane. As for the latter, I’m choosing to concentrate on and appreciate my favorite things.
We are all tired. However, unless people take this extremely seriously, get vaccinated, and continue to mask up and practice social distancing, “normal” will not return and our fellow humans (including loved ones) will needlessly continue to suffer and die. As a current meme suggests, let us all practice humility, kindness, and community.
I share your sentiments and frustration about compliance and wanting normal back. I think I’ve had enough moping for the past month and also need to just focus on activities and consuming what makes me happy. Stay well!
All we can control is what we can do. And so we wear a cubreboca and practice social distancing when out and about and treasure beauty in the moments.
Thanx for the mental health lesson! > Gratitude IS understanding. It heals.
A lesson easy to preach but SO hard to practice. All we can do is try! Buena suerte.
I just arrived from Arizona and if you think it’s bad here…it’s not. At least not compared to “the pandemic is over attitude and defiance” in
Arizona. Good to be back…stay safe. Nice pics again! You have a good eye.
¡Muchisimas gracias David! Welcome back to Oaxaca.
I’m sick of the anti vaxxers. Shots should be mandated. Love your photos!
Thanks! Besides being a retired librarian, I’m a former RN and am having a really hard time tolerating dangerous and willful ignorance.
Discouraging news, indeed. I read that AMLO is targeting 5 states to receive new shipments of the vaccine and Oaxaca is one of them. Hopefully he’ll walk his talk.
Yes, more vaccines have arrived and are being given in the most affected regions. However, none of us will ever be safe until vaccines are readily and freely available to all communities of the world.
Delta causing untold havoc in Mexico and South of . Agree shots should be mandated, everywhere, included here in norte del el norte. Be safe , good you use cubreboca et al, and focus on stuff; we perhaps ignored during pre-pandemic times. And cherish the good we had and hope will continue in near future.
Despite the challenges, I’m very happy to be weathering this worldwide storm down Oaxaca way. At least the weather is conducive to outdoor living, the walls are art galleries, and fresh fruits and veggies are readily available. Be safe!!!
Everyone’s comments here really are spot on. Please stay safe!
Sending safe and healthy thoughts your way!
