In varying states of repair and disrepair and in a rainbow of colors, old but indomitable VW Beetles (known as Vochos in Mexico) are still seen tooling and sputtering their way around Oaxaca — an ideal car for navigating the narrow streets and limited parking in the city.
As the old Timex watch commercial used to say, “It takes a licking and keeps on ticking!”
First trip to Mexico in 1966 was in a 1963 Beetle. We drove all the way from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Oaxaca and points in between. It was the best car to have because Mexico City at the time had VW parts, repairs, tires and dealers which we needed by the time we got that far. No parts or repairs to speak of for American or Japanese models. We bought everything in sight and that little Beetle held it all for the trip back home.
