You may remember the beautiful hat tree I commissioned from the San Martín Tilcajete workshop of Jésus Sosa Calvo. In these mask-wearing times of Covid-19, it has taken on a new function.
No longer serving as a place to hang my hat or market baskets, it now holds my collection of cubrebocas (face masks).
In case you are wondering why there are seven of them hanging on the tree, each KN95 mask is labeled with a day of the week, so I can rotate them.
New function following fabulous form!
A sign of the times!
Alas, yes. But, plucking the day’s mask from my “tree” brings a smile.
I was in Oaxaca from Feb to July, before I left I purchased about 50 embroidered Cubrebocas, different colors, different patterns. I took 6 of the most colored and patterned Cubres and had a them encased in this beautiful box, made in Oaxaca. Back on the USA I received nothing but compliments for their artistic and cultural look. I don’t think you can find these art forms anywhere else in Mexico.
What a great and decorative idea!
Hi Shannon, I love your blog. I’ve seen it occasionally but now I’m in Saskatchewan and miss Oaxaca so I read it more often.
I’ve been to Oaxaca in the winters for a month or so on and off since 2004 and really miss it. Hope to be back next year. Thanks for a really nice blog. ❤️
Thank you for reading! Oaxaca will be here when it is safe to return.
Cool!!!
When I commissioned it, never in my wildest dreams would I ever have imagined it would be used to hold face masks.
