To borrow a line from Cole Porter, Oaxaca regrets there will be no Muertos this year, señora.
Due to a rebound in positive Covid-19 cases in both the capital and state (we are back in traffic light orange — with red threatening), yesterday the city council of Oaxaca unanimously voted to cancel all Day of the Dead activities (NVI Noticias). That means there will be no comparsas (parades), altar displays, sand paintings, costume contests, and no cemetery visits. Other municipalities are expected to follow suit. If you have plans to be here for Día de Muertos, I strongly urge you to reconsider.

Given this sad and sobering news and the above Catrín and Catrina seen on this morning’s walk, I keep flashing on the Cole Porter song, Miss Otis Regrets — especially this dirge-like version by Kristy MacColl.
This is serious and no time to let your guard down. Please practice social distancing, wash your hands frequently, and for goodness sake, cover your mouth AND nose with a mask when out in public!!!
So sad. I’m grateful that I made the journey south last year. Hopefully the ban won’t keep the spirits of the departed away.
The departed come, whether tourists are here or not. They will follow the incense and marigolds leading the way to the feasts their living families have prepared to share and enjoy with them.
Most importantly we hope the people of Oaxaca are safe from Covid. We will come together and celebrate one day soon fate willing.
Yes, the health and safety of the people of Oaxaca are what is most important.
Hmmm. I’m coming down on the 1st to avoid the elections/returns and any whiplash here thereafter…AND to get some long overdue expensive dental work done. I have a huge bag of masks, and am staying at the very clean Conzatti with open air restaurant. I lived through red here, so am assuming the same there…..I’m also bringing a big bottle of spray, wipes, etc. Primero Dios.
It you must come down, I would strongly urge you to quarantine for the recommended 14 days.
Thank you for your post. Setting my sight and heart on 2021.
And I’m setting my sight and heart on 2020 to see my family up in el norte!
No Day of the Dead activities in San Miguel de Allende as well. Even though we are in the “yellow” light, they are operating on the side of caution. We have had few cases in the last 8 months in SMA but everyone wants to keep it that way. No festivities, except virtual but the most disconcerting is no church bells due to no religious services until recently.
Dial up the Francis Faye version on You Tube…definitive!
Thanks, will do!
Many will be disappointed and loose money. Better that than sorrowfully planning a real day of the dead.
Exactly!
