From the streets of Oaxaca, Benito Juárez is masked and throwing hand sanitizer, as the Covid-19 denier-in-chief looks down from el norte.
Police violence and protests captured on cell phones and broadcast live on the internet fill our screens and walls.
George Floyd, plus countless others, are dead but not forgotten.
There is no joy in Oaxaca as the twin plagues of the virus and racism command our consciousness here, there, and everywhere.
Very sad, very unsettling times everywhere. Especially sad seeing these murals compared to the beautiful, colorful and engaging murals you typically post. However, it’s reality and we’re all living it, or living through it, where ever we are located. Thanks for keeping us updated.
Thank you Barbra for continuing to read and comment. The walls of Oaxaca have always spoken to the beauty, tragedy, and politics. With all the fear and ugliness these days, I’ve tried to concentrate on the lovely and positive. However, as you say this is the reality we are living and is impossible to ignore.
thanks for this, Shannon
You’re welcome, Barry!
“no joy in the twin plagues”, exactly….oh but the art and the way the message is written literally on the walls here in Oaxaca. Thanks Shannon.
Yes, artists play such an important role in chronicling life and times.
Tiempo muy, muy triste ! Also quite saddened by the awful tragedy in San Mateo del Mar. Indigenous have suffered enough on many levels.
Yes, for those of us who feel, it’s impossible not to be touched by the tragedies being visited upon the world.
