“Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”
All you have to do is click your heels together three times and say “There’s no place like Oaxaca.”
And you too can be a Tehuana in Oaxaca.
Seen on the wall outside Wearable Art Textile Studio, Gurrión 110 — across from the south side of Santo Domingo.
Update: Artist is Froy Padilla Aragón (aka, Efedefroy). Check out an article (en español) about him HERE.
This was also placed on the wall of the kitchen at Casa Milagros in Oaxaca City. I have mixed emotions. I loved that kitchen before Dorothy made her appearance.
A few days ago, I saw a guy wearing a T-shirt with the Tehuana Dorothy image. Given, the number of Oaxaqueños living, having lived, or having relatives living in the US and that both Dorothy and Oaxaca’s Tehuana traje (thanks in part to the popularity of Frida Kahlo) are iconic on both sides of the border, I can see and appreciate the inspiration. Besides, there is no place like Oaxaca!
Efedefroy!
Thanks, Barry! I’ve added an update to the post with his name and a link to an article about him.
