After being in el norte for an entire year (by far the longest I’ve been away from Oaxaca since I relocated 15+ years ago), I’m back! It’s been mostly a smooth return — well, except for my refrigerator’s failed fuse, causing a freezer full of tamales, mole, and soup stocks to spoil. Thankfully, my neighbors discovered it the day before my return and emptied and cleaned the refrigerator and an electrician replaced the fuse a mere ten hours before my arrival. Since then, this past week has been spent restocking the larder, cleaning, attending to the garden, catching up with friends, and enjoying my home, my neighborhood, and the flavors of Oaxaca — including…
The murals…
The streets…
The door-to-door flower vendor…
The comida…
And, let’s not forget, the view from Casita Colibrí!
It’s SO good to be back — alas, if only for a month. However, I intend to relish every moment!

Well, I’m very glad to have you back, virtually, for all the things above, allowing me to half-pretend I’m spending time in Oaxaca. And of course for your “take” on life in your writing and photography, I’m curious about those neighbor cats, though. They look pretty healthy and well fed. As a childless cat lady, with none at present, I’d probably have a yardful if I lived there.
The property was owned by a very sweet and quite elderly woman who fed them but wouldn’t allow them to be sterilized. So they kept multiplying. She died 1+ years ago and her family started cleaning up the property and let the free sterilization clinic do their thing. I think they sterilized over 40 cats, but alas, they couldn’t catch them all. It’s a problem, as the stench from the males spraying drifts over the neighborhood, including onto my terrace. I like cats, but… 😉
Enjoy every minute!
Thanks, I did!
Hi Shannon, are you considering moving from Oaxaca? I’m still trying to figure out how to move there (with big dog…). Hope you are ok.
No, not planning to move away from Oaxaca. I’m great, but due to a family health issue, I need to spend more time in el norte.
Welcome back Shannon ! Best to your new adventures/ photos and the tranquil Oaxacan life
Alas, I was only able to stay 4 weeks but I’ve kept my apartment and will return!
Hello Spixl,I read your posts with interest and was so surprised to realize th
This is my first time one your website and reading your blog. My husban and I just returned from our first trip to Oaxaca where he gave talk on Diego Rivera’s Detroit Industry Murals at the Oaxaca Lending Library. We very much enjoyed our trip. Normally, I go to Guanajuato every year to continue Spanish studies, but may return to Oaxaca. Thanks for your very interesting information
