This evening, the rain began falling as the delegations for the first Saturday Guelaguetza desfile began gathering. Are we having fun, yet?
However, just like last year, the show must go on and the dancing must be done.
Some even looked like they were having fun. Of course, they were well covered!
I wasn’t, so this wimpy gringa headed back to her casa and a glass of wine (insert smiley face). By the way, to add insult to injury, tonight’s press is reporting that the route was changed — and it wasn’t just me who was clueless. Ahhh… Oaxaca!!!
Why is the Guelaguetza not taking place the last two Mondays of July this year?
The Guelaguetza is held on the two Mondays immediately following July 16, except when the first Monday falls on July 18, the day on which Benito Juárez died. Out of respect, the celebrations are postponed for one week.
So next year it would be on July 23rd and 30th? I asked this question to your fellow blogger Chris. He told me that they didn’t want to dance on July 31st, so that is why I am trying to get some understanding of the Guelaguetza being earlier this year as I thought it was always the last two Mondays in July. Thanks for your reply.
Hello again,
It is possible to get an answer to my inquiry from yesterday? Both you and Chris seems to be so knowledgeable about Oaxaca. Chris just gave me a flippant answer that he doesn’t make up the rules. I would like to attend the Guelaguetza next year as it looks so wonderful from your photos but I would like to know if it will be Juy 23rd and 30th? It would be greatly appreciated to hear back from you. Muchas gracias otra vez.
Yes, going by the above formula, the 2018 Guelaguetza *should* be July 23 & 30. But, I can’t make any guarantees… things sometimes change and Chris and I often seem to be the last to know. Here is the Secretaría de Turismo website: http://www.sectur.oaxaca.gob.mx/# In a month or two, you could also check with the larger hotels and travel agencies re Guelaguetza 2018 dates.
Thank you for the information!
¡De nada!
