At loose ends, can’t seem to focus on anything else, and since people have asked, here are photos from this morning’s walk through, what may be, an emerging war zone…
The blockades have resumed throughout the state and a mega march of teachers, parents, and supporters entered the zócalo a couple of hours ago. I fear, as the handwriting on the wall says, this is just the beginning.
To all who have expressed concern for my safety, many thanks. No worries, bottom line, I’m a chicken and have no plans to go out again today OR anytime there is even a hint of feeling unsafe.
And, if you want to follow the events on Twitter, the hashtag #OaxacaGrita is being used.
Your post earlier this morning sent me on a research trip to understand better what is happening. Needless to say I now how more questions than answers. It’s complex. We have friends who were living there during the 2006 movement. I hope things settle down much fast this time around. Oaxaca is one of my favorite places to visit. Thank you for your updates and disquieting photos. Staying indoors for a while sounds like a good plan.
Thank you Christine. Yes, the issues are extremely complex, have been going on for a long time, and are part of much bigger and entrenched issues. Staying home isn’t so bad, as I have a great view, a rooftop garden, the soothing sounds of my new fountain, and lots of print and audio books!
That is a haunting graffiti…eso apenas inicia.
Indeed…
looks like Oakland after troubles
Alas, the same scene the world over. ;-(
OMG Shannon
I didn’t realize that the situation was getting out of hand again!
your photos are very troubling!
Such a beautiful city…my heart aches for Oaxaca
I was upset that our plans for Guelaguetza were canceled but now I am glad.
So sad……stay safe 😦
Yes, probably just as well you aren’t coming for Guelaguetza. No one knows what is going to happen and already reservations are being canceled. Poor Oaxaca, tourism has only just recovered from 2006. And, it’s not just the education issue, it’s a whole series of “reforms” passed by the federal government. Trying hard to just be the “observer” but it’s hard not to get emotional.
Hoping you stay safe…… staying at home isn’t ‘chicken’, but prudent.
It is indeed a complex situation.
Yes, complex and longstanding, the issues are. Your words of support and concern are much appreciated.
I was going to reach out today and get your thoughts, but the pictures you’ve posted pretty much sum it up I think. I will actually be in Oaxaca in two weeks. As a friend said, while all of this is going on, poverty continues.
Be safe
In the city… graffiti remains, streets have been cleaned, and the tents of the plantón still cover the zócalo and Alameda. EVERYONE is holding their breath. Let’s try again to rendezvous when you’re here.
Deal!
Reblogged this on Dave Miller's Mexico and commented:
Want to get an idea of what the historic city center of Oaxaca looks like right now? Check these out and you’ll understand why so many of us are upset right now.
Thanks for the reblog!
My pleasure…
