Is it cheating to post photos from the 2013 Mexican Independence Day desfile in Oaxaca? What can I say? It was raining today and, if it counts for anything, I never got around to posting these photos last year.
However, I do have some news from this year: The state police staged a protest and, besides your’s truly, Governor Cue did not attend — and I don’t think it was the rain that stopped him!
Hey, we’d have never known they were from last year.
What is the proportion of women in the armed forces in Mexico? How long do they sign up for?
According to a 2007 article,
“Women first joined Mexico’s armed forces in 1938 as nurses. By 1973, they could become military doctors, and three years later, dentists. Today, women have access to 17 of the military’s 39 career schools. And with access has come increased interest: 3,326 women applied for military schooling in 2007-2008, up 61% from the year before.”
“Currently, women make up only 6,309 of the 191,000 members of Mexico’s military. Radilla predicts that could rise to 8,920 by 2012.” http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/world/2007-09-28-mexico-military_N.htm
Nice. Thanks, again, Shannon. My favorite photo is of the man adjusting something for the young boy.
