Domingo’s escape from the city out into the countryside of Oaxaca brought back one of my fondest childhood memories: Sunday drives with my grandparents into the golden hills of northern California. Two-lane winding roads with only the occasional car or pickup truck; farms, fields, and roadside stands outside my rolled down window always brought a sense of adventure mixed with freedom and serenity. And, it still does…
Oaxaca city to Teotitlán del Valle, where we yielded to a herd of cattle.
Santiago Matalán past fields of agave to San Baltazar Chichicapam.
We continued on the mostly deserted road towards Octotlán de Morelos.
Onto Hwy. 175 and a lunch stop at the roadside restaurant, between Santo Tomás Jalieza and San Martín Tilcajete, from almost two weeks earlier.
And this time we noted the name: Los Huamuches. Another delicious comida… a perfect way to end our meandering and head for home.
Thanks for the name, Shannon! Can’t wait to try it. Siobhan
¡Buen provecho!
Great photos as always, Shannon. Did you go into Ocotlan? If so, did you stop in any of the studios of Las Hermanas Aguilar?
Thanks Frank! No we didn’t go into Ocotlán… we were starving and knew we wanted to go back to Los Huamuches. Still want to go to the studios. Have a painting, I love, by Demetrio Garcia Aguilar.
I really enjoyed your photos! Thanks for sharing. My husband and I are returning to Oaxaca this June and July. We can’t wait to travel around the campo!
¡Muchisimas gracias, Amanda! Perhaps we can rendezvous when you are here.
I’ve seen some of Demetrio’s work and liked it very much. Glad you do too. I believe he is Josefina’s son. Do try to visit the sisters’ studios when you get a chance. It’s at least half a day’s tour and great fun to see the work and meet the artists.
Will do! And, in the realm of coincidence… met Demetrio yesterday through my neighbor, who is an old friend of his.
