Yesterday, on the stairs leading to the Basilica de la Soledad, I bought my woven palm fronds from these gals.
However, this gal insisted I take her picture, too!
And today, on the plaza in front of the Basilica, the faithful waited for the outdoor mass and the blessing of their palms.
That white hair is natural, isn’t it? It looks beautiful. Around here (Spain) elderly ladies dye their hair, and it never looks right because that blond or reddish or even black colour tends to create a contrast with the old face.
Trying to remember I can only think of one famous Westerner who walks around with grey hair: Joan Baez.
… and Emmylou Harris! Also, clothing designer, Eileen Fisher, uses models “of a certain age” with white hair — I agree, it looks so much better than dyed hair.
The hair of the majority of the indigenous remains thick and black, that is why these two women really stood out. Of course, many mestizo, middle class, and wealthy women dye their hair.
Thanks for stopping by!
Really enjoying your posts and pics. My wife and daughter lived in Oaxaca while she was doing graduate work and loved it. Unfortunately, I had to stay in the states and work so your blog gives me a better idea of what they experienced.
Thank you for your kind words. Sorry for the delay… had an out-of-town guest visiting Oaxaca for the first time. Said guest was, of course, enchanted!
