Arghhh! Maybe you are blessed with not having to hear all the sappy tributes to Mandela from the media and capitalist politicians – the attempt to turn Mandela into a Martin Luther King, whose legacy was also sullied by those who would deny the role of the masses of people who fought for freedom. Mandela led an armed struggle against apartheid. For decades his organization and he were labeled terrorists by the U.S. government, for nothing more than fighting for freedom for the Black majority. I am sick to death of this attempt to erase the real legacy of this man. And this is only the first day of the steady diet of this that we will be fed. Read The Struggle is My Life and Long Walk to Freedom to get a real sense of the movement he was a part of and led. This is the example we celebrate.
Watching CNNI and Al Jazeera — given their international audiences, probably marginally better. Of course, they too are lionizing him as an individual, not as a leader of a mass movement. Thanks for the references, full text of each is online:
